Keynote Address
Building a Sustainable Future>> |
|
This presentation is based on the numerous studies of the FTTH Council Europe and will first give an overview of the situation of FTTH in Europe and worldwide. Then it will discuss the three aspects of sustainable development: society, economy and environment.
The presentation will prove:
- FTTH and Environmental Sustainability: why FTTH- networks have a positive impact on the environment - FTTH and Economic Sustainability: how FTTH can contribute to economic growth - FTTH and Social Sustainability: why FTTH improves the quality of life
Several examples of FTTH users who already benefit from FTTH will back up the statements.
Karel Helsen, FTTH Council Europe

Next generation PON architectures.>> |
|
The so called next-generation PON networks (NGPON) aim at building network infraestructures that supports true broadband communications to a higher number of users, unlimitedly at no extra cost. In this talk, the recent NGPON solutions proposed in the FSAN and IEEE standardization bodies will be revised and new solutions proposed. Advanced new architectures, like the FP7 ICT-Sardana, implement a transparent converged metro-access network, setting an evolutionary path for current G/E-PON and incorporating functionalities of metropolitan networks like protection and traffic balancing, also providing a technical solution as open neutral network, shared by several operators.
Josep Prat, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC)

Computer-aided Network design and Solution Modeling – A revolutionary way working towards TCO reduction>> |
|
Computer-aided design (CAD) is changing the costs of FTTH Networks dramatically. Network Design Software automatically can determine the most cost-optimized Network Architecture, applying advanced algorithms now common in car route planner systems. 3D Product Design Software is widely applied in the search for the smallest low cost infrastructure products, yet easy and fast to install. Combining the best network architecture with the optimized network connectivity products gives a multidimensional approach towards tackling both CAPEX and OPEX, resulting in significant TCO (Total Costs of Ownership) reductions for FTTH Networks.

Needs and Drivers for a Fiber Deployment>> |
|
This presentation try to give an answer to the question “Why to roll out fiber today?”. Is there a real need?. Does it bring new opportunities? Point-Point or Point-Multipoint deployments? A review from current to new evolution fiber technologies will be covered.

ViaEuropa - probably the best broadband in the world>> |
|
ViaEuropa, open network operator since 1999
Gigabit since 2004
In Lund (Sweden) 2/3 of all apartments will have Gigabit during 2008
Now combined with 540 Mbps of citywide wifi
Probably the lowest opex in any open network
Blueprint for the telecom industry 2.0?

Panel Session: FTTx Operator Business Models & Case Studies
This session will present real case studies and will show how to implement and profit from FTTx environments. Here delegates will understand, where and how to pay attention in developing realisic plans for FTTx businesses
Moderator: Eugenio Rey Veiga, Editor, Área Electrónica, Grupo Tecnipublicaciones, S.L.
Participants: Ger Bakker, Unet (The Netherlands) Paolo Dal Bono, Telecom Italia (Italy) Frans-Anton Vermast, City of Amsterdam (The Netherlands) Dirk v.d. Woude, City of Amsterdam (The Netherlands)
14.30-15.00 FTTx architecture - different requirements for FTTH and FTTB networks In this presentation Ger will analyse the requirements on different designs for FTTH and FTTB networks.
Ger Bakker, CTO, Unet
15.00-15.30 Telecom Italia domestic NGN2: Updated development plan & first deployment experiences. In 2008 Telecom Italia started a technical trial of its NGN2 in the Milan area; in 2009 the deployment will continue the in the Rome area. The installation activity carried out is bringing a large experience focusing on the main critical aspects. Many important issues have been discussed within the regulatory field too. This new knowledge, together with some new technological considerations, has allowed Telecom Italia to delineate possible different deployment scenarios
Paolo Dal Bono, Telecom Italia
15.30-16.30 The Amsterdam project
Creating Successful 21st Century Communities
• Examining the Amsterdam open access three layer model
• Providing ubiquitous broadband to all of Amsterdam
• Facilitating economic and social growth
Frans-Anton Vermast, City of Amsterdam (The Netherlands) Dirk v.d. Woude, City of Amsterdam (The Netherlands)

Panel Session: Analyst's Round Table
The brightest analysts from the Yankee Group, Idate and Ventura Partners will debate the state-of-the-art of Next Generation Networks. This panel includes some presentations analysing market trends, projects, architectures and technologies, but the intention is that delegates will have a unique opportunity to discuss questions and issues with Europe's leading analysts and experts.
Participants: Benoît Felten, Principal Analyst, Yankee Group (Moderador) Roland Montagne, Head of Broadband Practice, IDATE Stefan Stanislawski, Partner, Ventura Partners
16.45-17.05 Revenue Upswing from FTTH Exploring evidence that FTTH ARPUs (Average Revenue per User) are higher than DSL ARPUs and explaining the reasons.
Benoît Felten, Principal Analyst, Yankee Group
17.05-17.25 "FTTH Worldwide Picture – Key issues" This presentation will deliver the FTTH picture and try to analyse what will be the future challenges to solve in order to see massive FTTH rollouts in the future. So main goal of the presentation will be to present first a worldwide panorama on FTTH at end 2008. Japan FTTH market the leader (around 15 million FTTH/B subscribers at end 2008) and the US one (deployments of RBOCs) will be described. Then we will focus on European market who was counting around 1.7 million FTTH/B subscribers and around 11.2 million homes passed at end 2008. Different players (from Power Utilities to Incumbent) are involved in such FTTH deployments in Europe in countries like Italy, Sweden, Denmark, The Netherlands or France.
Roland Montagne, Head of Broadband Practice, IDATE
17.25-17.45 Finance and Economics of an FTTH project
Stefan Stanislawski, Partner, Ventura Partners
17.45-18.15 Questions & Answers
