Con el rápido crecimiento de Internet y la demanda de servicios de banda ancha, las redes de acceso han recibido en los últimos años inversiones cada vez mayores. Esto ha dado como resultado un despliegue enorme de la red, con el objetivo de eliminar el cuello de botella de ancho de banda entre los usuarios finales y el núcleo de la red. Hoy en día se están empleando muchas tecnologías diversas para proporcionar el acceso de banda ancha a los usuarios finales. La arquitectura y el rendimiento del acceso (bucle local, redes de acceso de cobre, fibra e inalámbricas, e incluso redes locales de usuarios empresariales y residenciales) están consiguiendo una atención creciente para asegurar la calidad de servicio de las diversas aplicaciones de banda ancha. Además, la mayoría de las líneas de acceso no se terminan sobre un único dispositivo. Por lo tanto, la red de acceso y su porción de la red del edificio o campus tiene cada vez una mayor importancia, tanto para los proveedores de servicio como para las empresas y particulares.
Este Tutorial pretende cubrir todos los aspectos relacionados con las redes de acceso basadas en FTTx y su núcleo de red, se presentarán los avances fundamentales, las tecnologías y aplicaciones para la empresa y las redes del hogar de esta excitante y polémica área.
